MTV Hive: The Only Black Guy at the Indie Rock Show

There was no individual precedent for my love of alternative and punk culture. My family and neighborhood friends all exclusively listened to contemporary rap and R&B, the former not truly capturing my imagination until a year later (Wu-Tang Clan’s “C.R.E.A.M.” was the rap equivalent of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in terms of opening my eyes to a new world). R&B still doesn’t appeal to me. There’s a sense of defiance that comes with liking something you’re not “supposed” to like; in a way, I knew I was sabotaging the uniform order among black kids my age. But mostly, it felt like something I could claim for my own, a part of American culture that wasn’t handed down to me or illustrated in history books. It wasn’t my parents’ music. It was something that was happening right now, and regardless of the color lines placed between it and me, it was something that I was a part of.

MP3: Mocky - Little Bird
Beautiful track:
Today, Mocky shares “Little Bird”, the first glimpse of the upcoming Graveyard Novelas EP which is due 2/25/13 from Heavy Sheet. To create this gem, Mocky recorded part of it in Berlin with a 30 piece choir and the other part in LA with an auto-tuned vibraphone.Graveyard Novelas sees the eclectic and ever hard to classify songwriter and producer Mocky continuing to explore new territory. Recently, he was a secret weapon as a writer and co-producer on such epic albums as Feist’s The Reminder and Metals and on Jamie Lidell’s Multiply. Now, his forthcoming EP spans Mocky’s recent move from Berlin to LA and musically bridges the gap between these two metropolises, finding lots of common musical ground, from Berlin’s dark club sounds to LA’s hipnagogic songwriting rennaisance. The EP also features vocals from the silken-voiced Hilary Gay and Pegasus Warning as well as Mocky himself, while Lucky Paul lends a hand on co-production. Mocky recently partnered with Warner Chappell to co-found his own publishing venture Heavy Sheet/Warner Chappell and the Graveyard Novelas EP is being released on Heavy Sheet on 2/25/13.

MP3: Big Boi feat. Little Dragon - Mama Told Me
Just leaked last night:
It’s hard enough for a song to create a clamor on the Internet once, but for one song to do it twice? The Flush-produced “Mama Told Me” first made a splash this summer when OutKast’s Big Boi performed the song live with Little Dragon in Austin. However, a later leak featured Destiny Child’s Kelly Rowland on the hook and bridge instead of the Swedish pop darlings—leaving everyone to wonder what the heck happened. Citing “business terms out of our control,” the ’80s funk ditty on Big Boi’s album will feature Rowland when his Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors drops on Tuesday, but it’s Little Dragon who will perform with him on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight. Good to see business not getting in the way of friendship and even better to hear the Little Dragon version, which was released by Big Boi today. One thing that’s remained consistent is the infectious beat supplied by the production team of Jeron Ward, Rick Wallkk and Go Dreamer, aka The Flush. And an ATLien’s stamp of approval doesn’t get anymore official than one from the notary office of Big Boi—especially with a song so nice, he had to release it twice.
