With all the swag and hipster rap out now, hip-hop has clearly gone in another direction since its beloved (by old fogies like me) old school and ‘Golden Era’ periods. For all my fellow curmudgeon the friends who bemoan the lack of classic sounding rap nowadays, I’ve often said: “You know there’s probably a 16 year old kid in a basement somewhere who’s listening to his dad or older brother’s Illmatic album [or insert your classic of choice] and he’s going to reinterpret that sound and make it relevant all over again…” Well for all of you who miss the sound of dusty, SP1200-S950 sample-powered hip-hop, with the arrival of Joey Bada$$, that day might have finally arrived. Harbinger of the return of ‘real’ hip-hop? We’ll see….
